In the lone SHA provincial match up last night, the Grenfell Spitfires headed west on Highway #1 into Balgonie to take on the Bisons in a packed Stardome. Grenfell and Balgonie came into the Southern A semi-final after convincing wins in their previous series, with Grenfell knocking off Bienfait and Balgonie topping Midale. These two teams are familiar foes, both playing out of the QVHL, where the Bisons took two of three head-to-head meetings this year.
Things started well for the home side as Jaret Eberle opened the scoring nine minutes into the opening frame. Before the first ended, however, Colton Schick replied for the visitors and both teams headed to the locker rooms tied at one.
The action went back and forth in the second period as Lance Herauf gave the Bison the early 2-1 lead, only to have Tanner Mitchell tie the game 4 minutes later. The Spitfires finally grabbed the lead midway through the second, before goals by Drew Istace and Brad Herauf gave the home side the 4 - 3 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Spitfires worked hard, and were rewarded with a pair of quick goals to take an early 5 - 4 lead. Grenfell appeared to be on their way to a win when they took an untimely penalty late in the third setting up the Bisons on the powerplay. With just over a minute to play Balgonie was able to tie the game as Brad Herauf set up Drew Istace for his second of the night, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
The first overtime decided nothing so a second twenty minute period was added. It was in the fifth period that the Spitfires were able to grab the road win, as Taylor Ernst, on the set up from Brett Kealey, beat Rob McVicar blocker side for the win.
Game two is set to go Sunday night in Grenfell.
